An interview with a Women in Tri UK community member embracing the power of movement at 40.

Mara, instead of a big party for your 40th, you're taking on 40 challenges. What inspired that idea?
Mara: It actually started as something I planned for my husband’s 40th, but we had to postpone it. When my own milestone came around, I decided to do something just for me. Rather than a single celebration, I wanted to spread it out across the year—and make it meaningful. It’s about celebrating my friends, my family, and what my body is capable of. I’ve made it to 40, and that’s something to be grateful for.
What kinds of challenges are on the list?
Mara: I’ve split them into four categories: places to visit, races and events, shows and gigs, and a mixed ‘other’ category. Some are fun, some are tough, some I’m doing alone, and others with loved ones. There’s a good mix!
Which of the challenges feel the most daunting?
Mara: Definitely the triathlon, the half marathon, and the tough mudder. The triathlon excites and scares me in equal measure—but I’ve got a plan, so the excitement is winning... for now!
Any other challenges that stand out?
Mara: Sewing a garment with a zip! Honestly, that might be harder than the triathlon. It’s completely out of my comfort zone, but that’s part of the fun.

How did you start training for all of this?
Mara: I began the year by restarting Couch to 5k. I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly sporty. I’ve had a very up-and-down relationship with fitness throughout my adult life.
Did you join a local trip club?
Mara: I tried, but juggling timings with kids and other commitments made it difficult. My husband is super supportive, but it’s a balancing act—we can’t both be out every night.
So how are you getting the support you need?
Mara: I started working with a fitness coach. She originally helped with my running, but she’s also a GB triathlete and coach, so she’s now supporting my training more broadly—especially helping me navigate the information overload!
What's it been like fitting this all in with family life?
Mara: It’s been a challenge. January and February were rough—lots of bugs and low energy. But I did what I could and kept going. March and April have been much better. The weather helps! And I’ve surprised myself—I actually look forward to my runs now.

How has the community supported you?
Mara: Finding Women in Tri UK (formerly Fund Her Tri UK) was a game changer. It gave me confidence that this goal wasn’t ridiculous. The support and advice from other women has been amazing—whether they’re seasoned triathletes or total beginners like me.
Do you think representation in triathlon is improving?
Mara: There’s progress, but triathlon still has some catching up to do compared to running. Initiatives like Women in Tri UK are crucial—not just to get more women involved, but to show that all kinds of women belong in this sport. We need more diversity in every sense.
What has been the most rewarding part so far?
Mara: Seeing my six-year-old get excited about what I’m doing. I want to be an active mum, to be able to keep up with my boys. And turning 40 has changed my mindset—I’m more focused on health and less likely to hold back. I’ve adopted a bit of a “Why not?!” attitude.
What advice would you give to other women considering their first triathlon or a big personal challenge?
Mara: Go for it. Life throws enough obstacles our way—don’t let your mindset be one of them. Our bodies and minds are amazing. Trust in them.
And once you complete all 40 challenges - what then?
Mara: Sleep! Definitely sleep!
